Simple tips to conserve water at home

Every drop counts — especially when it comes to our shared water supply. By making a few simple changes at home, you can save hundreds of litres of water each week while helping to protect Cavan’s natural water sources.

Why Water Conservation Matters

Clean water is something we often take for granted — until there’s a shortage or a dry spell. While Ireland is known for its rain, the truth is that treated drinking water is a limited and valuable resource.

Every litre that comes through your tap has been collected, treated, and pumped — using energy, time, and effort. Using water wisely helps reduce costs, protect the environment, and ensure that there’s enough for everyone on our local group water scheme.

Even small actions make a big difference when the whole community gets involved.

In the Bathroom

Around one-third of household water use happens in the bathroom — so it’s a great place to start saving.

  • Take shorter showers. Cutting your shower time from 10 minutes to 5 can save up to 50 litres.
  • Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or shaving — that’s another 6 litres saved each time.
  • Fix dripping taps and running toilets. A single leaking tap can waste more than 20 litres a day!
  • Install a water-efficient showerhead or dual-flush toilet — small upgrades with big savings.

In the Kitchen

It’s easy to waste water without realising it in the kitchen — especially when washing, cooking, and cleaning.

  • Use a basin for washing fruit, vegetables, or dishes instead of letting the tap run.
  • Only run the dishwasher when it’s full. Many modern machines use less water per wash than handwashing.
  • Collect clean rinse water to water plants.
  • Chill drinking water in the fridge rather than running the tap until it’s cold.

In the Laundry

Washing machines account for about 13% of household water use.

  • Always wait for a full load before running your washing machine.
  • Choose the eco or quick wash cycle if your machine has one.
  • Consider upgrading to a water-efficient appliance when it’s time for a replacement.

Outdoors and in the Garden

Gardens can use a surprising amount of water during the summer months.

  • Collect rainwater in a water butt or barrel for watering plants and washing tools.
  • Water early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation.
  • Use a watering can instead of a hose — it’s gentler on plants and uses far less water.
  • Choose drought-tolerant plants that thrive in Ireland’s variable weather.
  • Sweep patios and driveways instead of hosing them down.

Around the House

  • Check for hidden leaks. Look out for damp patches, unexpectedly high water use, or the sound of running water when everything is turned off.
  • Know where your stopcock is — and make sure everyone in the house knows how to turn it off in an emergency.
  • Talk about water use with your family. Kids especially enjoy seeing how small changes (like timing showers) can make a real impact!

Every Drop Counts in Cavan

Even though we’re surrounded by lakes, streams, and rain, clean drinking water doesn’t come easily. Our local sources — wells, springs, and lakes — need to be protected and used wisely to stay sustainable for the future.

When everyone in the community does their part, we all benefit: fewer shortages, lower costs, and a cleaner environment.
